Visit
CIAJG – Centro Internacional das Artes José de Guimarães
CIAJG, in the Plataforma das Artes e da Criatividade, presents itself as a museum of contemporary art and a place of wonder and reflection for those who visit it. It was inaugurated in 2012, within the framework of Guimarães 2012 European Capital of Culture, and brings together pieces from different times, countries, and cultures.
Inside, you'll be able to find three collections that José de Guimarães, an artist from Guimarães, gathered over five decades. The pieces traverse civilizations from three continents with rich and complex cultures - African Art, Pre-Columbian Art, and Ancient Chinese Art - and provide visitors with a reflection on human diversity and Art History.
Throughout the visit, many objects are presented that tell the stories that history has not recorded. Among masks, sculptures, and canvases from countries such as Angola, Congo, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Mali, Gabon, Burkina Faso, and Mexico, this place functions as an atlas that will make you travel in time, through very distant places.
The CIAJG building is, by itself, radically different and contrasts with all the surrounding space. Over the years, it received several national and international awards in architecture and culture.
When visiting Guimarães, be sure to visit this museum, which in addition to the permanent exhibitions offers a very diverse program.
Cool Tip: After getting to know more about the art of the world, explore the culture, territory and history of the city itself in Casa da Memória. Enjoy the joint ticket for a special price!
